Opportunities for Former ITT Tech Students
While IU does not accept direct transfer credit from ITT Tech, if you have credits from ITT Technical Institute and are looking for a new college opportunity, you may have options at Indiana University.
Some things you should know before starting:
- In Indiana, ITT falls under the regulation of the Board of Proprietary Education (a division of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education). Complaints and petitions for relief may be initiated from their website at https://www.in.gov/che/student-complaints/.
- The Federal Government has established an information page specifically addressing the issues of ITT’s closure and the impact on loans and financial aid. This information may be found on their website at https://studentaid.gov/announcements-events/itt.
- You will not be able to get credit by matching an ITT Tech class to an equivalent IU class.
- Each IU campus may have slightly different policies with regard to if and how you might receive credit.
- Credit approved by one IU campus may not transfer the same way to another IU campus.
- While the information below will be a good start, your best strategy will be to talk to an advisor or admissions counselor at your IU campus of choice.

As a student transferring into IU, you may be able to get credit through exams or prior learning assessment. This includes CLEP testing, DSST, credit by credential, or credit by portfolio. Each of these are ways to show the university that you are familiar with the required material, so that you do not have to take classes on information you already know. Exams like CLEP tests cost a fee, but are usually less than the time and money associated with retaking a course.
Ask your advisor about these options, what you may be eligible for based on your background and experience, and what your IU campus will accept.
If you are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science using credit you have earned at ITT Tech, IU has a pathway that may help you. First, you must complete an Associates of Applied Science (AAS) at another institution, like Ivy Tech or Vincennes University. Once you have the AAS, you may be able to transfer those 60+ credits into IU, and you will be half way to earning a BAS. To learn more, or to contact an advisor, visit the Bachelor of Applied Science page on our website, at https://online.iu.edu/degrees/applied-science-bas-undergraduate.html.
Regardless of your approach, if you wish to earn a degree through IU, you will be held to the standards of IU students. Your credit and progress will be evaluated according to these standards. However, our advisors, admissions counselors, and faculty are here to help you. We want to see you succeed, and we’d be proud to welcome you to Indiana University.
