Opening Remarks and Welcome

Susan Sciame-Giesecke

Susan Sciame-Giesecke is the Indiana University Interim Executive Vice President for University Academic Affairs, a position she assumed on July 1, 2021. She is also the IU Kokomo chancellor.

In her role as Executive Vice President, Sciame-Giesecke is responsible for Indiana University’s five regional campuses. She leads collaborative efforts with the campuses to maximize opportunities for student success, such as multi-campus degree programs. Additionally, she is responsible for university-wide academic initiatives and programs, external academic relations, and online education.

Sciame-Giesecke has been a strong voice for the importance of higher education as a benefit to everyone.

Carolyn Gentle-Genitty

A leader in transfer at the state and university level in Indiana, Dr. Carolyn Gentle-Genitty is well-known in her field for innovation, partnership, and valuing what students can buy with their transfer credit. She has launched and sustained various transfer initiatives from making transfer a priority through Caucus action, gaining data and student experiences for policy and practice decision-making to removing localized barriers with sending and receiving institutions and engaging in state policy implementation to finesse pathways and articulations in degree approvals.

Keynote Speaker

Doug Shapiro

Doug Shapiro, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, which advances student success by providing the education community with data and insights from the nation’s largest student-level dataset of college enrollment and degree information.

In his work at the Clearinghouse he established over a dozen new reports and benchmarks on student enrollment, persistence, transfer and completion. He also developed research and data services to help high schools, states, postsecondary institutions, and researchers to measure student educational outcomes. Shapiro has conducted research in higher education at the institution, state and national levels for more than twenty years and has been quoted in national media including The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, NPR, Forbes and The Washington Post. Prior to joining the Clearinghouse, he was Director of Institutional Research at The New School, and Vice President for Research and Policy Development at the Minnesota Private College Council. He has served as a board member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Shapiro holds a Ph.D. in Education, an M.A. in Mathematics, and a B.A. in History. He lives in Brooklyn, NY.
